He was deaf, did not speak, and at his home in Dandeli, in the Indian state of Karnataka, that condition had become a source of constant arguments between his parents. According to what the mother herself, 26-year-old Savitri, told police, her husband Ravi Kumar repeatedly pressured her to get rid of the child because of his disability. One Saturday night, after one of those arguments, she took him to a canal connected to the Kali River, an area where crocodiles are plentiful, and dropped him into the water.
Neighbors alerted authorities, and police began a search that darkness forced them to suspend. It was not until the following day that they found Vinod’s body. Savitri and Ravi Kumar were arrested and face murder charges, while the courts investigate whether the child was already dead before he entered the water. He left behind a brother who was just 2 years old, now in the care of relatives, and the question that no explanation can answer: what went through the minds of two parents to bring them to this?
