Christian Zedig was 32, a police officer in Sweden and the father of two girls. On June 30 he was in Copenhagen, off duty, watching the Norway vs. Ivory Coast match on a giant screen by the waterfront. When a fight broke out between strangers, he did what probably any police officer would do: he stepped in to break it up.

He suffered a single blow. According to the Copenhagen prosecutor, the impact fractured a cervical vertebra and caused a brain hemorrhage. He underwent emergency surgery, but did not survive.

The attacker fled and Danish police searched for him for days, until he turned himself in on July 3. He is around 30 years old and had already served seven years in prison for stabbing another man in 2017. The following Sunday, before Brazil vs. Norway, the same fan zone observed a minute of silence for Zedig. His wife Emelie and his two daughters now have to learn to live without him, because he tried to stop something that wasn’t even his fight.
