A father ran all the way to his daughter’s school without knowing whether he would find her alive.
The water had flowed down from a collapsed glacier in Tibet and moved so quickly that, within minutes, a dormitory 100 meters from the river was completely submerged. When it reached Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School, in Nuwakot, Nepal, the main building was already mud and rubble. Nothing remained standing where his daughter had been studying hours earlier.
What that father did not know was that principal Rajendra Dawadi, 47, had received four warning calls that morning and decided to evacuate all 900 students just in time. Yunisha Amatya, 16, ran uphill and managed to reunite with her mother three days later. Not everyone was so lucky: a history teacher and a school caretaker were swept away by the current while trying to close the doors.
