A fire razed her home, and she lost everything except the tree she had planted with her daughter’s ashes. Miraculously, it survived and bloomed again.

In January 2025, the Eaton Fire devastated Altadena. Lexi Benavente and her family ran out, with no time to pack a suitcase.

“Everything vanished”, she later said. Everything was gone. The house, the memories, and the tree she had planted in honor of her daughter Kaia.

Kaia was stillborn. Lexi was 37 weeks into a normal pregnancy when she stopped feeling her move. The doctors were never able to explain why her heart stopped.

Lexi and her husband, Alan, had her cremated. And they planted a duranta in the garden, to watch something that was part of their home grow. “It wasn’t just a tree; her ashes were there”.

Just days before the fire, the family had celebrated what would have been Kaia’s third birthday.

Months later, Lexi returned to the lot where her home had stood. Among the charred remains, something green was pushing upward.

Kaia’s tree was still alive. It was one of the first signs of new life in the entire garden.

Lexi cleared the space, put up a small barrier, and has gone every week since to water it.

She lost a home and a daughter. Even so, she says she was left with nothing. She was left with everything that matters: her family and the people who support her.
