Eduin is 12 years old and follows a routine that few children his age know.
After leaving school in Los Angeles, he doesn’t go home to rest: he walks straight to his family’s taco stand, where he cooks the meat, serves customers, and translates for his mom whenever she needs him. To get there, he used to ride an old, rusty bicycle without a light or helmet, on streets where that can be dangerous.
Firefighter Miranda, from the Montebello Fire Department, heard Eduin’s story and didn’t stop at simply feeling moved. He went and bought him a new bicycle, complete with a helmet and light, so the route he takes every afternoon would be a little safer. A simple gesture that, for a child who already shoulders adult responsibilities, meant much more than a gift.
