Adriana Caballero covers football with a camera over her shoulder, and one day a photo of her went viral because of what she was wearing.

An image led to a direct complaint to the outlet that published it. Shortly afterward, the press department of Sportivo Ameliano, a top-division club in Paraguay, circulated a “smart casual” dress code for the journalists and photographers who would cover its match against Olimpia.

It prohibited women from wearing low-cut blouses, garments that left the navel exposed, and leggings that were not black or dark blue. The text ended with a phrase: “A good image also communicates”.

““When I read this statement, to be very honest with you, it did shock me”,” she said. What worried her most was that the scandal might end up hurting her colleagues.

The reaction was immediate. The club’s president, Héctor Melgarejo, came out to disavow the measure: “It’s crazy. It was published without authorization. That’s not what we stand for at Sportivo Ameliano. I apologize”. The restrictions were lifted, and the press will be allowed in wearing their usual clothes.

A woman is doing her job. Should what she wears be any business of the club?
