Bianca Robinson went to the funeral home one day before her mother’s funeral.
She wanted to see her one last time. In the coffin was a woman wearing Kimberly Moore’s dress and wig. Kimberly was 61 years old, but that woman was not her. Robinson knew because of a detail only a daughter could notice: her mother had a distinctive mole on her foot, and that woman did not. An employee of Hutchinson Funeral Home in Detroit gave her an explanation that left no room for doubt: they had probably cremated her mother by mistake one or two weeks earlier, when another family brought in a woman with a similar name on the same day.
The family never received the ashes that the funeral home claims belong to them. Even so, the following Saturday they held a farewell ceremony without a body or remains. The funeral home said it was “devastated” and opened an internal review, while police investigate what happened to Kimberly Moore’s actual remains and those of the other woman, whose own family is also awaiting answers.
