Kevin Behrens, 33, a VfL Wolfsburg striker, was at a charity signing event in September 2024 when someone handed him a shirt in rainbow colors. He refused to sign it. And according to the German newspaper Bild, it didn’t stop there: he made a homophobic remark that ended up costing him dearly.
The club did not let it slide. It suspended him, although it did not specify for how long, and its sporting director, Sebastian Schindzielorz, was blunt: “homophobia has no place” in Wolfsburg. The rainbow shirt has for five years been a symbol of the club’s support for diversity.
Behrens ended up signing the shirt that same night and later issued a public apology, saying his reaction was spontaneous and did not represent hostility toward anyone. But the question remains, dividing fans: how far do a player’s personal convictions go before they clash with what his shirt represents?
