A child playing behind his home in Brook Haven Trailer Park, Opelika, Alabama, found a human skull on the ground on January 28, 2012. What began as the discovery of a bone possibly dragged there by a dog turned into the recovery of complete remains beside a creek, accompanied by a pink shirt with heart-shaped buttons. Forensic analysis determined that the bones belonged to an African American girl between four and seven years old. Her bones were underdeveloped, consistent with severe malnutrition. She had a visible deformity in her left eye, possibly caused by repeated trauma. In total, she had more than 15 fractures distributed across her skull, arms, legs, shoulders, and ribs. All had been inflicted before her death. Her DNA did not match any missing persons records. Within four months, the case was shelved. Thirteen years later, the girl is still known only as Opelika Jane Doe.
