Two days. That was how long a Venezuelan girl refused to rest while the rubble from an earthquake buried her home and, with it, her tortoise.

It did not matter how many times they told her there were more urgent things to deal with. For her, there were not. Her best friend was still down there, and she was not going to leave without him. The firefighters, moved by her insistence, ended up digging through the concrete until they found him alive.

The rescue went viral on social media as a breath of humanity in the midst of one of the worst seismic tragedies Venezuela has faced in more than a century. Because sometimes, a girl’s love for her pet can outweigh the weight of the rubble.
