A millionaire father put a price on his daughter’s marriage and didn’t even take her into account.

In September 2012, Cecil Chao, a Hong Kong real estate and shipping magnate, promised about $65 million (500 million Hong Kong dollars) to the man who could win over and marry his 33-year-old daughter, Gigi.

The detail that makes it so unusual: she had been with her partner, Sean Eav, for seven years, and the two had held a blessing ceremony in France.

Gigi told the BBC that at first she thought her father was joking. She received around 1.500 offers on social media, and according to the local press, even a group of suitors with chocolates and red roses waited in the lobby of her office, some after traveling from Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

Chao, 76, who had never married, said she was ‘intelligent and beautiful’ and could do whatever she wanted, while he continued looking for a ‘good husband’ for her.

A father’s gesture of love or the most expensive way to ignore who his daughter is?
