In Yeongcheon, South Korea, there is a Jesus unlike any other you have seen.
His arms are extended on the cross, his body carved in stone, and a physique that looks like it came from a gym, not a church. Pastor Jang Dal-yoon built it in November 2012, when he retired and decided to dedicate his hometown to the faith: he built two sanctuaries, five exhibition halls, and an entire sculpture park there. According to the park itself, the design seeks to represent “a powerful Jesus who bears the sins of the world”, inspired by bodybuilding aesthetics.
When the photos reached Reddit and Imgur, media outlets around the world dubbed it “Buff Korean Jesus” and global curiosity exploded. But behind the joke there is something simpler: each culture imagines Jesus in its own way, and in Korea they chose to represent him with the strength of someone who carries the weight of all humanity.
