A little dog was swimming with all her strength through the Limarí River in Chile, while Carabineros officers encouraged her from the shore to reach them. She made it. She survived the floodwaters that had swept away the home where she was alone.
The officers noticed a wound on her back and took her straight to the Municipal Veterinary Clinic. There, the diagnosis was devastating: a tumor in her throat, severe malnutrition, dead tissue from infection, hypothermia, and difficulty breathing. None of this was caused solely by the storm — she had been abandoned and suffering for some time.
The veterinary team determined that there was no real possibility of recovery and decided to euthanize her to prevent further pain. She swam to save herself from the storm, but life had abandoned her long before that flood.
