Brooklyn Dotson was 18 months old when her liver began to fail.
Doctors in Kentucky gave her only days to live until a donor appeared: Michael Waters, a 10-year-old boy from Dayton, Ohio, who had been killed after being struck by a car on December 19, 2003. His family decided to donate his organs because he himself had asked them to while he was alive. The transplant was performed at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and was successful.
What no one expected was that the two families would never lose touch. Brooklyn and Noah, Michael’s younger brother, met as children because of that donation and grew up building a bond that led to an engagement in December 2025. Tina Poteet, the mother of both brothers, says she always noticed something special between them: “I think the two of them had magic and discovered it when they were very young”.
They will get married on September 26, 2026 in Kentucky, and Brooklyn has already decided on something symbolic: she will take the surname Waters, the same as the boy who gave her the gift of life.
