A Pittsburgh man turned regret into a daily habit of helping strangers, until he donated a kidney to one of them

Jon Potter, 29, from Pittsburgh, United States, still remembers the guilt he felt in the summer of 2015 when he refused to give a ride to a woman fleeing to a shelter for victims of domestic violence. He never found out what happened to her. That night he promised himself he would never say no again.

Since then, he hasn’t stopped. He searches Reddit for posts from neighbors who need help: installing an antenna, taking a teenager home in the middle of the night, lending money to a stranger in crisis. He has already racked up more than 1,000 good deeds, almost four per day.

But nothing compares to what he did in August: donating a kidney to Mike Moore, a retired 58-year-old executive whom he met online thanks to his daughter’s desperate search. “The moment I heard his voice, I knew I wanted to do it”, Potter says. His family was afraid. He did not hesitate.
