A 49-year-old man lived with chronic swelling in both legs for 30 years and never set foot in a doctor’s office.
What began as lymphedema, a fairly common and treatable buildup of fluid under the skin, progressed unchecked into elephantiasis nostras verrucosa: the skin hardened, became covered in warts, and thickened until it took on a texture reminiscent of an elephant’s. By then, the damage was irreversible.
His complications included multiple infections that forced him to be hospitalized again and again. Even so, when doctors proposed surgery, he refused. His case was documented as a rare reminder of how far a simple skin condition can progress when no one treats it in time.
