The man only wanted a puppy. He entered the shelter with that fixed idea and left with two.

As soon as they chose him, the puppy didn’t run toward the door the way puppies eager to leave usually do. He pulled the other way. He led him straight to a cage in the back, where an older female dog was waiting, with the tired look of someone who had already lost hope that anyone would look at her twice.

It was his mother. The puppy had no intention of leaving without her.

The man understood the message without needing a translation. He signed the papers for both of them and left with a complete family, not a pet.
