The X-rays look like they were taken from a movie.

They show how a metal bar nearly two meters long completely pierced the body of South African Daniel de Wet during a mining accident in 2015. The piece of iron entered through the groin area and came out through his back, just below the shoulder blade.

The accident was so severe that he lost a kidney and suffered multiple internal injuries. Even so, he remained conscious while rescue teams pulled him out of the mine and, after complex surgery, he was discharged just 19 days later.

Many thought he would never play sports again.

But three years later, he surprised the world by completing the demanding Comrades Marathon, an 89-kilometer ultramarathon considered one of the toughest endurance events on the planet.

Daniel had already run that race six times before the accident, so crossing the finish line again had a much deeper meaning than any medal.

His story went viral again because the striking X-rays contrast with the image of him running once more, showing that even after an accident that seemed impossible to survive, he found the strength to compete again.
