Nelly Hernández had a debt of 1 million Mexican pesos (just over 54,000 dollars) and a perfect plan: to fake her death.
So in Juárez, Nuevo León, she circulated an obituary announcing her own wake at Capillas Funerarias La Fe. The problem was that no one at the funeral home had been told she was going to pretend to be there, so they publicly denied it within a matter of hours. The woman organized “tandas” —an informal scheme in which a group of people periodically contributes money to a common fund and each participant collects the total sum in an assigned turn— and left more than 300 people without their money. One of them said she contributed 750 Mexican pesos for 30 weeks, expecting furniture and appliances that never arrived.
Two days later, she came back to life. She said it was all because of depression and accused her own clients of defaming her. And as if that weren’t enough, a song dedicated to her titled ‘la Tandera de Juárez’ is now circulating. She faked her death to disappear and ended up more famous than ever. 💀🎶
