A mother and her 3 children returned to the same beach in Brazil to recreate a photograph taken 18 years earlier. The original image showed the family in the year 2000, when the children were still young and posed with their mother on the sand.
Nearly 2 decades later, they returned to the same place, stood in similar positions, and repeated the photo. The comparison drew attention because of the passage of time, but also because of the story of Gabriel Santos, one of the children, who during those years transitioned to become a transgender man.
The image was celebrated as a display of family acceptance. The first photo shows a childhood that has already been left behind; the second, a family that did not try to erase the changes, but rather embrace them. The sea was the same, but everyone had grown in a different way.
