A mother found the perfect trick to get her children to read: letting them stay up an extra hour if they opened a book

Becca Pike has a rule that sounds like a punishment but is actually the opposite.

In her house, the lights go out at 8 p.m. No exceptions. Well, with one: if you’re reading, you can stay up until 9. It started 10 years ago, when her eldest son—now 17—was just 7 and resisted going to sleep. Pike discovered something simple: kids will negotiate anything for an extra hour awake, even reading.

All four of her children grew up with that habit. Before they could read, they would stare at the illustrations in their books, learning to sit still without screens or noise. No one forces them. Even so, 85% of nights they choose to gather by the fire and read in silence instead of going straight to bed.

Today, they are all readers. But what Pike values most is not that; it’s having ended each day as a family, in silence, with the dogs snoring in the background instead of televisions left on and the last-minute rush before bed.
