A Canadian mother named Melanie Boivin obtained legal permission to donate her eggs to her daughter. Her daughter had infertility associated with Turner syndrome, and the donation opened up the possibility of having a child using her mother’s eggs.

If the plan went ahead, the donor would be the baby’s grandmother through her daughter and also its genetic mother through the eggs. For the daughter, the child would be her child and also her half-brother, because they would share the same genetic mother. The Nature article, dated July 3, 2007, presented that possibility from the daughter’s perspective: giving birth to her own half-brother.
