Tiffany Alberts had full access to her son’s room at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. No one suspected her because she was his mother.
The 15-year-old teenager, was battling leukemia when he began to develop unexplained blood infections, sepsis, vomiting, and diarrhea. Doctors analyzed the samples and found bacteria that normally only exist in fecal matter. They installed a hidden camera in the room, and it recorded Alberts manipulating a syringe over her son’s central line. She initially told investigators that she was only injecting water to “flush” it because the medicine burned. Then she admitted the truth: she kept her own son’s feces in a gift bag in the hospital bathroom and used them to get him transferred to another unit.
The infections forced chemotherapy to be suspended for almost two months, a period no cancer patient can afford to lose. The young man survived the severe infections and managed to recover. However, his health was severely compromised. In 2019, a jury acquitted her of attempted murder, but convicted her on six counts of aggravated assault and one count of neglect. The sentence: seven years in prison and five years of probation.
