Kane was just another rescued dog, adopted a year earlier by the Tarmey family in Manchester, New Hampshire. No one imagined he would return the favor in that way.
One Sunday in July 2024, in the early morning hours, 55-year-old neighbor Donald Pierce appeared naked at the back door of 86-year-old Ned Tarmey’s home and attacked him, beating him with a brick and even patio furniture. Kane did not hesitate: he jumped on Pierce and held him pinned to the ground until the police arrived. The officers needed a stun gun to make the dog release the attacker.
Ned ended up hospitalized in intensive care, but out of danger. Pierce faces more than a dozen charges, including aggravated assault and animal cruelty. Days later, Kane visited Ned in the hospital: the reunion between the grandfather and the dog that saved his life was as simple as a couple of licks and a tail wagging nonstop.
