A 33-year-old forestry worker suffered a serious accident after being struck by a branch in an Austrian forest. He was rushed by helicopter to Graz University Hospital with a skull fracture, without imagining what would happen inside the operating room.
During the emergency surgery, the neurosurgeon in charge allowed her 13-year-old daughter to enter. According to the prosecutor’s investigation, the girl even used the surgical drill to make a hole in the patient’s skull. The doctor later admitted that letting her daughter in was “the biggest mistake of her life”, although she maintained that the surgery was under strict medical supervision at all times.
Although the procedure did not cause any immediate additional aftereffects, the man spent 11 days in intensive care and was unable to work for a prolonged period. The most unusual thing is that he did not know what had happened during his operation until months later, when he read the news in the press. In November 2024, the prosecution closed the criminal proceedings after reaching an agreement on financial compensation with the victim, while the surgeon and a colleague who was present were dismissed from the medical center.
