For those who have animals, one of the worst questions during an emergency is what will happen to them if they have to evacuate.
Portugal has decided to incorporate that concern directly into its Civil Protection system. The new legislation specifically includes the search for, rescue of, and assistance to animals in the event of fires, floods, accidents, and other emergency situations.
The regulations establish coordination between Civil Protection agencies and authorities specializing in animal health and welfare. They also provide for the participation of veterinarians and organizations dedicated to the rescue, evacuation, and sheltering of animals.
In addition, centralized spaces must be set up to receive them temporarily, with resources for their accommodation, rescue, and classification for the duration of the emergency.
Thus, in the face of a disaster, saving lives in Portugal now also officially includes those with four legs ❤️.
