A cry interrupted the excavation. In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, Hitesh Kumar and his family were digging to bury their own newborn daughter, who had died, when they found another baby wrapped in cloth inside an earthen pot buried near a cemetery. The girl was breathing and was taken to a hospital.

The newborn had been born prematurely, weighed 1,1 kilograms, and was treated for a lung infection. Doctors estimated she may have spent nearly two days underground. She was found on October 10, 2019.

After nearly two months of treatment, she received a medical certificate declaring her fit for discharge and was transferred to a care center. The excavation meant to prepare a farewell ended with a second baby on her way to receiving care.
