A cow newly arrived at a New York farm got scared, escaped into the woods, and spent 4 days on the loose, leading to one of the year’s sweetest police pursuits

Maggie had been in her new home for only a few hours when she decided it wasn’t the place for her.

She is a 4-year-old Highland cow weighing about 700 pounds. Her owners, Mariana and Stephen Brophy, had brought her on Tuesday, October 20, from a farm in Massachusetts to Little Cabin’s Farm in Carmel, New York. Everything was new to her: the truck, the property, the smells. “She got a little scared, jumped, and headed into the woods”, Mariana told News12. From that moment on, the Brophys followed her for four days.

Maggie didn’t stay hidden. A video shows her trotting along a road as incredulous drivers watched from their cars and police officers followed behind. An officer tried to lasso her right in the road, but she dodged him. They finally caught her: footage from one of the officers’ cameras shows them calmly guiding her toward a trailer.

No one was injured. Maggie, who the farm says is pregnant and recovering, is now safe and back with her calf. For the Brophys, the hardest part was those anxious days worrying about traffic. Now they say she “has a lot of love” around her. And the farm thanked the police and the entire community that helped bring her back.
