The hardest part wasn’t just losing someone. It was having to wipe away the tears and go back to caring for the next patient as if nothing had happened.

Olivia Tyler, a nurse from the United States, shared a video after one of her patients died. She appeared silently crying during a break in her shift and wrote: “I lost a patient today”.

What made the moment even more raw was what she added afterward: “I have to keep going, I still have five hours left”.

The video quickly went viral because it showed a part of healthcare work that is almost never seen. Doctors and nurses can go from being with someone as they die to walking into another room minutes later, answering questions, administering medication, and carrying on even when they’re emotionally shattered.

There was criticism, too. Some users questioned the decision to record at a moment like that, while other healthcare professionals came to her defense and said that these losses really do weigh on you, even though over time you learn to keep working.
Olivia explained that she wasn’t seeking attention, but wanted to show that behind the uniform are people who grow attached, care deeply, and carry the weight of every loss far more than many people imagine.

Because sometimes the shift goes on, even when inside, you’re still standing in the room that has just been left empty.
