Ten nights in the hospital. That was how long Wiphaphon Namkhan’s son, a barely one-year-old boy, had been hospitalized while being treated for respiratory and gastrointestinal infections at Loengnoktha Crown Prince Hospital in Yasothon, Thailand.
On September 11, 2026, he was finally discharged. A nursing assistant was trying to remove the gauze securing the baby’s intravenous line and, according to the mother’s account, used paper scissors instead of medical instruments. The assistant slid them between the child’s little fingers several times without managing to cut the bandage. Until blood began to flow. That’s when they discovered that part of his right index finger had been cut off. The fragment traveled in a cooler alongside the child to Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital in Ubon Ratchathani, where surgeons performed two operations to reattach it. The hospital publicly apologized on Facebook, suspended the assistant responsible, and promised to cover all medical and rehabilitation expenses. So far, no one has confirmed whether the reattachment was successful.
