Juan Cruz Andrés learned that terminal cancer had left him little time to live, and instead of giving up, he and Karina Jiménez made one of the most difficult decisions a couple can face.

They decided to have a child. From the very beginning, they knew that Juan would never get to hold him in his arms or watch him grow.

Each week of the pregnancy was also a different kind of countdown: life arriving as his own was fading away.

“A piece of Juan to last a lifetime”, Karina would repeat, as if that phrase could sustain what was coming.
He never got to meet his son. But he left undeniable proof that he existed, that he loved, that he chose to multiply life even as his own slipped through his hands.
