26-year-old Botham Jean was sitting on his couch, watching TV and eating ice cream, when his apartment door opened.

It was the night of September 6, 2018, in Dallas. Amber Guyger, a police officer and his downstairs neighbor, was returning from her shift. By mistake, she arrived on the fourth floor instead of the third, walked to Jean’s apartment and found the door ajar.

She went in, thinking she was in her own home, saw a silhouette in the living room and fired: she thought it was an intruder. She was the intruder.
Jean was shot and lost his life inside his own home. Guyger called 911 and soon realized she had entered the wrong apartment.

In 2019, she was convicted of murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison. In 2024, a federal jury ordered her to pay Jean’s family 98,65 million dollars.

This October, the Texas parole board granted her parole after she had served nearly seven years of her sentence.

A mix-up over the floor ended up changing the lives of two families forever. What do you think?
