Sergeant Howard Marshall saw Willie Hatcher trying to fix his tie before a job interview and decided to stop to help him. He didn’t know him and had no obligation to do so, but he took a few minutes to teach him how to tie the knot properly before he continued on his way.
The scene was photographed and ended up going viral precisely because of the gesture’s naturalness: a stranger helping another person at a moment that could have been important to him.
Days later, the story had an even better ending. Hatcher got the job, and Marshall learned that small act of help had been part of a day that ultimately changed things for him.
