Rebekah Dauz had just seen her son smile.
It was September 6, 2025, in Las Vegas. The 4D ultrasound had shown the baby moving and playing with his thumb, and the family left the appointment happy: Rebekah, seven months pregnant, her husband Chester, her 9-year-old son Isaiah, and her daughter. It was only 2:20 in the afternoon, and the only plan was to go home.

According to police, the driver of a Jeep entered an intersection against a red light and caused a four-vehicle crash. Maximiliano Chavez, 28, was speeding and, according to authorities, was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. Isaiah was critically injured and spent several days in intensive care. Rebekah had to undergo emergency surgery in an attempt to save the baby: he was born, but died despite medical efforts.

Prosecutors said Chavez had previous DUI arrests. At the hearing, Rebekah’s son said he forgave him. She said the crash left her physically and emotionally scarred. Would you forgive someone who destroyed the happiest moment of your life?
