It was 9:20 in the morning on August 26 in Nepal’s Trishuli Valley. 🏔️
Rajendra Dadabi, 47, principal of Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School, received a call from a friend in Betrawati, eight kilometers upriver: the water was coming with tremendous force.
There were already 900 students inside the school, and another 700 were walking there. There was no time to hesitate.
Within minutes, he led the 1,643 students to higher ground, gathering them beneath a bodhi tree as the three-story building disappeared under the water.
A glacial collapse near the border with Tibet had unleashed a torrent of ice, rock, and mud that swept away entire villages in Nuwakot District.
Two members of the school staff died that day, but no student was left behind.
Amid a tragedy that has already claimed hundreds of lives and left thousands missing in Nepal, one teacher’s decision became the difference between life and death for 1,643 families. 🙌
