A delicate clinical case in the United Kingdom raised health alerts about the risks of severe dependence associated with the prolonged use of doctor-prescribed drugs.

The affected woman, 32-year-old Caitlin Atkins, said that her problem began at 16 when she was admitted to the hospital for stomach pains caused by polycystic ovary syndrome and was prescribed tramadol and codeine phosphate. After taking the drugs like they were candy, the woman developed such a high tolerance that she moved on to daily heroin use and other narcotics.

Spending on these types of substances came to exceed 1.250 dollars per day until she achieved sobriety in 2022.
