In his church, in South Africa’s Limpopo province, the healing ritual consists of sitting on his congregants’ heads and expelling gas directly into their faces. According to him, the Holy Spirit enters the body through the nose, and that air is a blessing. He told Drum in 2021, bluntly: “It is a demonstration of God’s power”.
The line to receive him is long: some followers wait up to two months for their turn. Some keep their gas as proof of healing, and there was even talk of bottles being sold with his flatulence. Penelope has a history: he previously anointed his congregation with condom lubricant and made them eat a supposedly extinct snake. His spiritual mentor, Pastor Lesego Daniel, is famous for giving his followers gasoline to drink.
