A Sphynx cat, barely one year old, spent months locked up in Cereso No. 3 prison in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. There, inmates from the “Los Mexicles” gang turned him into something like a canvas: they tattooed both sides of his body, including the phrase “Made in Mexico”, the same symbol the gang uses to mark territory.
Veterinarian Diego Poggio, who examined him after the rescue, was blunt: everything indicates that they tattooed him without anesthesia, while the animal was fully conscious. A form of abuse disguised as prison “art”.
Authorities removed him from there during a raid and handed him over to the RAMMI shelter. César René Díaz, Ciudad Juárez’s ecology director, said that the cat is healthy, free of infections, and very sociable. A municipal committee approved his adoption, and weeks later he ended up crossing the border to a new home in Texas. He survived prison. Now all he needed was someone to truly care for him.
