Gringo had no owner or roof over his head.
He wandered around thin and sick in the vicinity of a gas station in Lima, Peru, until the employees began leaving him food every day. Javier del Castillo, one of the workers, says the dog became a regular visitor, almost part of the scenery. No one imagined that this routine of shared meals would become a silent pact.
The station had suffered eleven robberies in three months. One morning, two men armed with knives entered and demanded money from an employee. Gringo did not hesitate: he ran out and chased the robber until he scared both of them away. “Even though they had knives, even though they wanted to hurt him”, Castillo recalled.
The company decided to officially hire him as a security guard: uniform, ID badge, wooden house, and three meals a day. Today, Gringo patrols the gas station and plays with the staff in his free time. “He knows whether you come with good or bad intentions”, says Castillo. No one taught him. They simply returned the favor.
