Godfrey Cuotto boarded the 10 B-Line Express bus like any Tuesday in October in Hamilton, Ontario. He did not expect a stranger to sit next to him and, without saying a word, take his hand.
At first, he thought it was a joke. But the man, whom he would later learn was named Robert, clung to him, leaned on his shoulder, and even kissed his hands. Godfrey understood that there was no trick: Robert simply needed to feel safe. So he stayed still, holding his hand for the entire 30-minute journey, while another passenger captured the scene and uploaded it to the ‘Only In Hamilton’ Facebook page.
The photo went viral within hours. Shortly afterward, Robert’s family contacted Godfrey to thank him and tell him what he did not know: Robert lives with cerebral palsy and is deaf, and that quiet gesture from a stranger had been, for him, a moment of real calm.
