Oscar McCrae is 14 years old. On April 25, 2025, he was calmly surfing at Saunton Sands, Devon, when he heard Gavin Bowden shouting, a man who had just become temporarily paralyzed in the water after an accident with his paddleboard.
He did not hesitate. With years of surf lifesaving training, he kept him afloat, conscious, and calm for more than half an hour, until the RNLI rescue team arrived. Neither the cold nor the weight of supporting an adult made him let go.
Gavin left the hospital just three days later and, ever since, calls Oscar his guardian angel. To him, that 14-year-old teenager was the person who stayed by his side when he needed it most.
