Leaving the hospital doesn’t always mean the fight is over. For many women who have beaten breast cancer, treatment involved having one or both breasts removed. And then come the things almost no one sees: standing in front of the mirror, getting dressed in the morning, going out, and trying to feel like themselves again.

That’s exactly where the proposal from Tijuana lawmaker Araceli Geraldo comes in: survivors would receive their breast prostheses at no cost. As she explains, this isn’t a luxury. A prosthesis helps clothes fit the way they used to and, above all, helps restore confidence and self-esteem after everything they’ve been through. The problem is that not everyone can afford one.

The context matters: in Mexico, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among women aged 25 and older. Every woman who manages to beat it has a story worth celebrating.

For now, it’s just an initiative: it still has to be introduced and debated in Congress. Are you in favor?
