Jim Gum decided to overcome his fear of heights in an unusual way.
After battling dizziness during the ferry trip to Dún Aonghasa, on the island of Inis Mór, which is part of the Aran Islands off the coast of County Galway, Ireland, Jim had to complete his final challenge: taking in the Atlantic Ocean from atop the cliffs, with no edge, railings, or safety net, just stone beneath his body.
Since he couldn’t trust his legs, Jim used his last resort: crawling along the ground.
The video was recorded by his son in 2017 under the title: “Dad Faces Some Demons”, and shows him moving forward inch by inch until he reaches the edge of the void. His wife, beside him, calmly guides him as she says: “You have to hold your gaze for five seconds, without interruption, facing the Atlantic”.
Jim obeyed, raised his head, and looked in both directions, trembling but determined.
The video continues to move those who are also afraid of heights. Because sometimes overcoming a fear doesn’t mean ceasing to feel it, but facing it anyway, even if you have to crawl.
