On Sunday, June 21, 2026, an 18-wheeler transporting them lost control and overturned into a ditch in Mauriceville, a rural community in Orange County, near the Louisiana border. The result was mathematically terrifying: between 60,000 and 80,000 bees per hive, multiplied by 406. At least 24 million agitated honeybees took to the open air at the same time.
County emergency services immediately issued a public alert for residents in the Colony Drive area: doors closed, windows sealed, do not go outside under any circumstances. Christie Ray, owner of the beekeeping business Queen Bee Supply and a neighbor in the area, was one of the first to arrive and document the scene. Chris Moore, of Moore Honey, came with his son and employees along with volunteers from three other beekeeping companies in the region to try to recover whatever remained. His assessment was cold and precise: only around 25% of the hives would survive, depending on how many queens remained alive after the impact.
No source confirmed the condition of the truck driver. Their identity and condition remained undisclosed at the time of publication. The road was left impassable.
