Lee Bondurant, 51, has cerebral palsy and cannot use his hands. That Memorial Day weekend, at the 42nd St. Oyster Bar in Raleigh, North Carolina, his mom Linda was trying to eat and feed him at the same time, as she always does.

A college student working as a waiter, known only as Five, approached without asking uncomfortable questions. He asked Lee if he had ever tried oysters. Since he never had, Five offered to feed them to him himself, completely naturally, without gestures of pity or strange looks.

Linda said that gesture restored her faith in people. Lee, who almost never accepts help, let that stranger make him feel like any other customer enjoying his meal. A month later, they returned to the same restaurant to celebrate Lee’s birthday, and Five was no longer a stranger, but a friend.
