Marsha Widener opened a cardboard box in front of her house. Inside were the ashes of Don, the man she had been married to for years. Before emptying the bag, she looked at the camera and calmly said: “I know you won’t understand why I’m doing this”.

Neither Don’s brother nor his own children wanted to keep them. Marsha said that everyone preferred for them to end up in the trash rather than on a shelf. As she spoke, she recalled the times he hit her in the head and when he smashed her face against a window. Since Don had worked driving a garbage truck, she decided that the landfill would be the final destination for his remains.

She emptied the ashes into a bin, threw the bag on top, and lowered the lid with a simple “goodbye, friend”. Although the video was recorded in 2017, it periodically goes viral again and continues to divide opinions: for some, it represents the end of years of abuse; for others, a lack of respect for the dead.
