Bonnie Lynn Pierce was already outside.
She was 38 years old, lived in St. Paul, Minnesota, and on August 22, 2026, managed to escape alive from her burning duplex on East Magnolia Avenue. But Grace, her barely 3-year-old daughter, was still inside. Pierce didn’t hesitate: she went back into the fire.
When a firefighter managed to reach a bedroom and lifted her from the floor, he found the girl underneath her, protected by her body. Mother and daughter were rescued together. Pierce went without oxygen for about 15 minutes and suffered burns over 48% of her body; she died two days later, on August 24. Another of her daughters, Aurora, had escaped on her own by breaking an air conditioner to get out through the window. Grace remains hospitalized and her family hopes she will make a full recovery. “It was the ultimate sacrifice”, said her sister McGovern, who described her as a hero.
