The kiss hurt like an electric shock.

In August 2017, Sarah Susak felt that pain on one side of her face as her husband, Halan, was saying goodbye to her.

The sensation led her to consult specialists and undergo tests, which revealed adenoid cystic carcinoma, an uncommon cancer of the head and neck.

The tumor was inside the left side of her face, and the operation to remove it lasted 18 hours.
She says the surgery left a hole in her nose and caused her to lose seven teeth: the pain of that kiss was the first warning of a long ordeal.
