The swan was not supposed to trust him. Swans are territorial and wary, and this one was also injured and frightened.
It all happened at the Abbotsbury Swannery, in Dorset, England, the largest colony of wild swans in the world. The animal had collided with a metal fence and needed urgent help. Richard Wiese, host of the program Born to Explore, held it against his body to calm it while it was examined before being taken to Swan Lifeline, an organization in Windsor dedicated to rehabilitating injured swans.
That was when something no one expected happened: the swan stopped resisting, relaxed its neck and wrapped it around Wiese’s, as if it knew exactly what it was doing. He could feel the bird’s heart beating against his chest. “It’s a wonderful moment when an animal completely trusts you”, he said afterward. A moment later, the swan headed off toward its recovery, leaving behind that image of silent gratitude.
