Scarlett Clarke was born with multiple brown birthmarks spread across much of her body. She is now 20 years old and lives with congenital melanocytic nevus, a rare genetic condition that can cover large areas of the skin with dark patches and, in some cases, hair.
The young woman said that some people ask her if she fell in the mud or if she is okay, especially when they see her arms, legs, or back. She understands that many questions come from curiosity, although she acknowledges that growing up visibly different was not always easy.
For years, she carried brochures to explain her condition when other children stared at her or asked questions. She is now an ambassador for an organization that supports people with the same diagnosis. In summer, she has to take extra care of her skin because of the risk of melanoma, but she still goes out, studies, and wears the clothes she wants.
